Excellent game! I find no major faults except one, which is either an oversight on my part or some bug in the game.

***SPOILERS***

I cannot continue the game from where Dexter wants a joke to play on a friend. I have the gloves and I tried gloves+dumpster yet it gives me no ketchup. I did look at the walk-through on your site to be sure I did all the things leading to that and it appears that I did. Not in exactly the same order but I doubt that had anything to do with it. Whatever it is, the dumpster wasn't triggered for the ketchup yet and I dont know why.

anyway thanks for making a fun game and I hope I can come back and load up my progress soon so I can complete it past the ketchup spot.

ArifRocks responds:

The walkthrough on the forum is just for one of the paths. The ketchup is just one joke that the engine can choose. You probably got a different practical joke. Check the bathroom graffiti in the bar for hints.

Pros:
1 - Smooth gameplay.
2 - Reasonable leveling and upgrade system.

Cons:
1 - Enemy never shoots back. Feels like shooting asteroids of various material types.
2 - Mission is considered failed even if you destroy all enemies when you get damaged from a collision even just once. What is that? Not a failed kill record. Just minor damage to ship. So why?
3 - Levels seem dull to play. No new backgrounds, environments. Gets very repetitive with only minor changes to enemies.

Suggestions:
1. Shields capability
2. Varied music tracks (simple loops are fine) depending on on levels...say every 3 to 5 levels, new music track.
3. Let enemies shoot back. The weaker ones shoot weak with rapid fire and tougher ones shoot strong but less often.
4. Various pickups as you say get a certain amount of points/kills in a level (something not too high so it can be reset often). Count resets after pickup is taken/moves out of screen.
5. swap the lame computer generated voice with a human voice that has been altered to sound like a robot. I've done this before in my work and its much smoother and easy to understand.

This game is a good start as it is, but has much more to get it more polished and more unique if it is to have a chance to stick out as something additively fun.

Thanks Mordoz.

I got awesome

114 top score so far. oddly fun in spite of it being annoying.

thinking-man responds:

True dat.

good game

Nice game.
Stage 5 is nearly impossible to get past.
Seems a bit too early to let out that high a difficulty.
Due to that, I became too frustrated to want to continue to play it.

3/5 6/10

Kenney responds:

You could always skip the level or play the first Ballista to get the hang of the physics. Thanks for the review!

horrible

Here's what I see as major issues preventing fun:

1- Clumsy controls: a. no crouch, so there is no chance to duck. There seem to be issues with standing on platforms sometimes.
2- Awkward movements: Stiff I'd describe it.
3- Unfinished feel to this. Even old school has health bars and full animation. And FUN.
4- The first boss is impossible to fight and the dialogue infers this as well. No hints or clue that you can beat it. Losses fun fast. All you can do is run farther than the bullet reach. *yawn*
5- Really annoying music. Just terrible. No variety heard or any option to change or mute it.
6- There is no reward for anything. No drive to achieve anything. There is nothing for the player to care about.
(badges, pickups, weapon upgrades BEFORE bosses etc.)
7- Boring environment. No backgrounds, just solid color. extreme minimalistic look. no lighting.

Overall the game as the look and feel of someone who just touched up a tutorial with minimal work. I'm not saying that's what you did. I'm just saying that is how it appears to me.

There are many basics that need to be met that all successful games have that this game doesn't have. Just compare this tot some of the classic games out there that DID do very well. Then tweak this a bit more to help draw players in, instead of frustrating them. You can keep things simple without denying the basics.

CIAO
Score so far: 1/5 3/10- Ill re-score if this is updated with drastic fun changes. As I'm sure many will do too. Oh, also try to find other play-testers who aren't just family and friends and only your age range. Perhaps put it on your NG page and get everyone to play-test there, then present the final update here again.

Chrome-Demon responds:

1-2 I can't possibly help you with, so I'm sorry those were big problems for you. I can assure you that the platforms work fine, however.

3 There are plenty of classic games that had no health bars and very stiff animation, I'm sorry to argue this one but that's just fact. :/ FUN is very important though, sorry if I missed that for you.

4 The first boss is rather simple to beat, and I'll be putting up a walk-through that demonstrates such probably later today. I can understand people having trouble figuring him out, but again the games I am referring to did not have instructions for boss-bashing either.

5 Hold C down to keep the menu open, then hit the "Sound Off" button. I made this so that people could turn off the music in the event that they found it hard to listen to. I noted this in the Author Comments section above, and there is a sign for the menu in the first stage, so I tried to help people figure that one out. :3

6 There are NG Medals and level-skip/character unlock passwords if you progress through the game. If you couldn't beat the first boss then you wouldn't have witnessed any of these, but they are there.

7 I made the bulk of the game in about 3 days last Christmas. I apologize that it doesn't quite look stellar, but I was intentionally going for the minimalist style. If it is offensive to the eyes I suppose I will approach it a different way next time.

Sorry my game didn't particularly appeal to you. I hope someday one of my games will. :3

HAHA Hilarious!

I hate all real dressup crap games...but yours mocks them...which is awesome!

All points to you!

also like the weird music...I like weird. It means different :D

zag responds:

mine doesn't necessarily mock them. I just decided to give the character a bit of personality XD
I don't understand why most of them lack dialogue or depth. it seems odd that I'd be the first to do this.
also, glad you enjoyed the music... I think XD

NICE!

Well implemented game!

Controls are like Pac-man yet this game smoothly adds other elements to keep it interesting. I especially like the tools you can use to make things a tad easier for a short time.

Great job! All the points are belong to you! 5/5 10/10

NOTE: There seems to be a very minor glitch and that is when you die, if you press the space bar you get the level again except the escalators don't move and it's hard to move at all. If the player does nothing and waits after dying, the main menu does come up. It may be a good idea to either allow the space button to reset the current level, or disabled after dying then re-enabled when main menu is shown again.
Other than that, I cant find any other issues. VERY well done!

kokodigital responds:

Thank you for the high rating. We have fixed this problem and re-uploaded. Many thanks for pointing this little bug out, we appreciate it!

great game!

Great game! only one big issue. So far, IU have gotten a strange big green square on the screen with a website url listed on it. Now this wouldn't be a problem if it weren't for it covering the dialogue area. so now I cant see what choices I can do to further the story...kinda sucks, I'm really into it but the damned huge square is in the way!

Can you fix this asap? I'm really wanting to continue the game! I'll make some random guess , as I can see only some choices last few letters. So it may kill the progress in choosing wrong.

In spite of that glaring block to the playability to the game, I know it can be easily fixed (re sized small or removed?) I'm giving your game full marks!

5/5 10/10

Please fix this as soon as you can. Thanks!

-Mordoz

Hyptosis responds:

That mistake has been fixed, I'm so daft, haha.

not approipriate

You know it sucks yet you posted it here. Usually such things to be shared between friends are posted on your blog. Its easy to do. then just direct your friends to THAT link. Then you wont lose it to being blammed. Just letting you know.

Do you plan to do more flash games? there's plenty of resources to help ya out to improve the game-play. Good luck!

Eogar responds:

Ye I know, I just cudn't be arsed to try and upload it to my website XD

I'm gonna look into that in the upcoming weeks since we just started a flash course (studying game-design now). I will be making more games but I prolly won't be coming back to this one. It would be a waste of time, maybe if I come up with some awesome game-mechanic for addition.
I have some prototypes on my website you are welcome to check out. Link can be found in my user, non are really finished and they're pretty rough. But still :) I think I have some interesting ideas.

ok I guess

Honestly I have seen better art in my students work they do in their sketches for art class at the end of each Friday. most of these are nice but few follow anything close to traditional figure drawing...yes even he heroes..those use heroic proportions, not realistic ones.

Aside from that critical thing. These are best suited for what they are for anyway, video games and comics and the like. So no major motion films for them. But I guess as a teacher, I kind of get tired of seeing stuff like this . The novelty wears off after a couple years of it.

I'm not understanding the need for such background fake papers. They were all done in flash or whatever program each prefers with those paper backgrounds right. So I don't see a point. I'd say its a little more impressive if entirely done on those papers freehand, then scanned over. Since paper drawing is a much different experience and skill-set than tablet or mouse drawing.

So overall I would guess some points for the efforts done to get tis ready, but this is roughly same or less than the quality my students put out in a 2 hour session every Friday afternoon for sketching time.

So grading as I do for my class, 10 being A and 1 being fail-redo, I give a 4/10
and over all flash a 2/5
Im sure you'll do better next friday :)

JKAmovies responds:

Not to sound like a douche, but I don't really believe you being a teacher (what kind of teacher goes on NG?). Sorry if I am wrong though.

As for the criticism, I'd like to see those 'students' of yours, because they must have some pretty good art abilities if that is true. Seriously though, the point of this is sketch drawings, and doing this on paper (even though being a very good idea) it would be a great distrait on many artists and doing that is a struggle for those who don't have such facility's to do so. This is a media based collab anyway, and trust me... Drawing media-based is just as hard (or even harder) as doing on paper. it involves knowing the program and utilize what it offers.

I guess this is solely for artists. This is something that artists would understand more than others.

Thanks for the criticism none the less, it is a help, though most of what you pointed out I do not agree with (I'm taking a guess that you're an English teacher if any). thanks ~JKA ;3

Inseminating elephants is more than a hobby of mine. It's a passion. PASSION I SAY! ...mmm
